Alexander Huegel was born in 1984 in Mediasch and grew up in Romania and Southern Germany. After studying Photography at the University of Applied Sciences and Arts Fachhochschule Dortmund, he worked as a self-taught media artist in the context of theatre, opera, performance, and video mapping.
His artistic work and research in the field of new media focus on motion tracking, computer vision, real-time video processing, and 3D. He is continuously developing new forms of storytelling with immersive technologies, using software for gaming development such as Unity Engine and Blender 3D, as well as 3D cameras.
Huegel has designed several multimedia stage sets for theatre institutions such as for the Opera Theatre Opernhaus Dortmund with the plays “La Juive” and “Die Bürgschaft”. He has also cooperated with the Academy for Theatre and Digitality and the Project Playon! at the new piece “Persona" funded by the EU, among other projects. For the binational livestream theatre play “Lysis-Structure” by Ayşe Kalmaz, he developed the hybrid stage design. He currently collaborates with several independent theatre collectives and museums in NRW, including LWL Archaeology Museum Herne.
Alexander Huegel has been working since 2018 as a media artist in WHY NOT? KOLLEKTIV, committed to creating not hegemonically coded spaces. In doing so, he critically reflects on the construction possibilities of narrative structures in gaming, in terms of hybrid stages, and their representation of performative works in collective processes.
Huegel was a founding member of WHY NOT? KOLLEKTIV and has been working continuously as a media artist since 2018. The media art dance performance WHY NOT? SUPER SONIC STORYTELLING which he co-created was awarded the Prize 2021 as part of the Artists in Residency Ruhr Program of the KREATIVCAMPUS.RUHR of ecce — european centre for creative economy.
