By and with: Romy Schmidt and Rojin Sharafi, with Alexander Huegel, Golnar Shahyar and Mohamad Tamem.
The Artist’s Residence Ruhr program was designed to support collaborative work processes and innovative productions in European exchange in order to promote the emergence of new networks and forms of work in global contexts and thus test new ways of artistic cooperation.
In an exchange between the WHYNOT? KOLLEKTIV, to which director and curator Romy Schmidt belongs and sound artist Rojin Sharafi (Vienna, Austria), a strong mutual desire emerged to collectively explore and develop different artistic approaches and new forms of shared memory and storytelling. The audience was thus given two spaces and perspectives from which to experience and interact with the performative work of Sharafi and Schmidt.
The starting point for the development was the bringing together of the various individual artistic processes, of the artists’ researching in different art disciplines around the collective questions: “Who” gets to be told in the German-speaking institutional and media mainstream; “How", "by Whom" and "for Whose viewing and listening habits?”. How can history(s) be retold? What spaces and (framework) conditions does that presuppose?
A virtual space, largely free of hegemonic narrative and performance traditions, was designed. This space is to be understood both as an extension of and as a juxtaposition to the analogue art space.
The first fully digital performance was created within the framework of Artists in Residence Ruhr of the KREATIV.CAMPUS.RUHR/ European centre for creative economy.
WHY NOT? SUPER SONIC STORYTELLING won an award for this piece in March 2021.WHY NOT? SUPER SONIC STORYTELLING was a guest at the Fokus Festival 2021 in the European City of Görlitz/ Zgorzelec.
